Late Elizabethan Couple

This richly dressed lord and lady are wearing fashions from about 1600, right at the end of Queen Elizabeth's reign.

The gentleman is dressed in a doublet of fine ivory and gold silk brocade with fashionable sage green silk hose and leather shoes. His sleeves end in deep lace cuffs and he wears a lace ruff around his neck. On his head is a silk feather trimmed hat.

The lady is dressed in ivory silk jacquard trimmed with fancy braid. She wears a style of skirt typical of this time known as the cartwheel farthingale. Her pointed stomacher is of finest silk brocade and her voluminous pink silk sleeves finish in wide lace cuffs. She wears a small lace ruff around her neck and a stiffened fan shaped collar behinds her shoulders.
